BNS Leopold 1 reunited with DSNSOn July 1st, 2009 Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding is reunited with one of the M-Frigates, our "Pride and Joy of the 1990's.
The BNS Leopold 1, built and designed by Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding as RNlN Hr. Ms. Karel Doorman, was transferred to the Belgium Navy in 2007 and is back at our shipyard to receive a Helicopter Deck Modification.
Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding is modifying the M-Class Frigates in order to operate, facilitate and accommodate the NH-90 helicopter.
This modification consists of the following activities:
- Lengthening the flightdeck, including placing of hydraulically operated flightdeck collapsible railing
- Adjusting the H-deck arrangement to integrate the new Helicopter Transfer System
- Lengthening the hangar
- Enlarging the FDO room.
- Placing the new hangar door.
- Adjusting the flightdeck arrangement
- Adjusting helicopter auxiliary and damage control systems
- Replacement of the electrical helicopter starting installation.
The execution of this modification on board BNS Leopold 1 starts in july 2009 and will be completed in April 2010.
